Collection of the Department of Numismatics and Monetary History
Origins
The numismatic reference collection (“Lehrapparat”) at the University of Vienna, which was founded in 1898 on the initiative of the Professor of Classical Studies Wilhelm Kubitschek (1858–1936), already included a collection of coins. This reference collection was part of the University’s “Archäologisch-Epigraphisches Seminar” (archaeological-epigraphic department), which combined ancient history and classical archaeology. The members of the numismatic society in Vienna supported Kubitschek in his endeavours. As one of his first purchases, he obtained a series of galvanos of Greek coins from the British Museum. Original items from the private collections of Dr. Reichel (maybe Vincenz Robert Reichel, † 1899; or Ernst Wolfgang Reichel, 1858–1900), Josef Schnellinger (1846–1904), Heinrich Cubasch (1849–1904), Eugen Schott (1826–1905), A. O. van Lennep († 1913) and Dr. Josef Scholz (1835–1916) are part of the collection as well. All these collections contained ancient coins exclusively.
Collection Brettauer
In 1907, the heirs of Dr. Josef Brettauer (1835–1905), an ophthalmologist living in Trieste, donated his collection of coins and medals to the University of Vienna. This collection includes almost 7,000 objects on the topic Medicina in Nummis and is one of the most influential collections on this subject. It is characterised not only by its remarkable completeness, but also by the excellent quality of the objects. In 1928, the University entrusted it to the national collection of coins, medals and monetary symbols at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (museum of fine arts), where it was used to compile a catalogue. In 1988, the collection by Brettauer was returned to the University of Vienna, where it found a completely new home, due to the relocation of the Department to its present location.
Department collection since 1965
In 1965, the “Institut für Antike Numismatik und Vorislamische Geschichte Mittelasiens” (department of ancient numismatics and pre-Islamic history of Central Asia) was founded and the numismatic reference collection became the department collection. Following the conversion of the department to become the Department of Numismatics in 1978, it became necessary to enlarge the collection by adding non-ancient objects as well. In 1978, the “Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium für Mädchen und Wirtschaftskundliches Bundesrealgymnasiums für Mädchen” (academic lower and secondary level school for girls and college for higher vocational education for girls) at Kleine Sperlgasse, Vienna, entrusted their school collection to the Department as a permanent loan. The collection comprises 1,696 coins of all periods. It traces back to a coin collection of the “Leopoldstädter Communal-Real- und Obergymnasium” (academic lower and upper secondary school) in Vienna.
When Wolfgang Hahn was appointed as associate professor of numismatics in 1990, the Department acquired 858 medieval and modern coins and banknotes from his collection. A significant addition to the department collection was a permanent loan from the estate of the Viennese medallist Edwin Grienauer (1893-1964): it includes design drawings, models, casting moulds, coin dies and medals by the artist. The last major addition to the collection was a collection of Bavarian paper necessity money from the early 20th century, donated by the Deutsche Bundesbank, Frankfurt, in 2007.
In 1979, the collection of ancient coins decimated due to burglary: about 7,500 coins were stolen. Large parts, albeit not all of the stolen coins, were seized on the international coin trading market and found their way back to the Department.
A special part of the department collection is the collection of plaster casts, especially of ancient coins. Most of them come from study collections of renowned numismatics, handed over to the Department. Particular mention should be made of Professor Andreas Alföldi’s (1895-1981) collection of contorniate medallions and coins from the Roman Republic, as well as of Rudolf Paulsen’s (1893-1975) collection of Celtic coins.
The department collection is one of the special strengths of the education provided at the Vienna Department of Numismatics and Monetary History. Almost all courses provide students with the opportunity to deal with originals from the collection, enabling them to practice the handling of original objects on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, the Department has not had the opportunity to add to the collection through targeted acquisitions for years. Therefore, we gladly accept high-quality donations that can help us close some gaps.
