Academic research at the Department of Numismatics and Monetary History focuses on the following research areas:

• Roman coinage and monetary economy
• Analysis of coin finds from antiquity to the modern period
• Recording Austrian coin finds from the Middle Ages to the modern period
• Integration of written source materials in numismatic research
• Structural analyses of coinage from the Roman imperial era to the modern period
• Iconography of ancient coin designs
• Coinage in the time of the Byzantine Empire
• Numismatics of ancient and modern Axum/Ethiopia
• History of coins in Bavaria from the early Middle Ages to the modern period
