Academic research at the Department of Numismatics and Monetary History focuses on the following research areas:
- Roman coinage and monetary economy
- Analysis of coin finds from antiquity to the modern period
- Recording Austrian coin finds from the Middle Ages to the modern period
- Integration of written source materials in numismatic research
- Structural analyses of coinage from the Roman imperial era to the modern period
- Iconography of ancient coin designs
- Coinage in the time of the Byzantine Empire
- Numismatics of ancient and modern Axum/Ethiopia
- History of coins in Bavaria from the early Middle Ages to the modern period
