The lead tokens of Roman Ephesus

Donnerstag, 21. November 2024, 18 Uhr (c.t.)

Hörsaal des Instituts für Numismatik und Geldgeschichte

Similar to several other major cities in the Roman Empire (e.g. Rome, Athens), lead tokens are found in Ephesus in relatively high numbers. This talk explores the peculiar characteristics of tokens from Ephesus, as well as what information they reveal about the city in the second and third centuries AD. Lead tokens carry the names of magistrates in the city, and reference civic identity, Roman culture, as well as practices of elite euergetism. Some tokens may have also travelled; if so, they likely reveal religious and festival networks.

Anschluss laden wir ein zu einem Glas Wein.
