Friedrich STEFAN (1886-1962)

Friedrich Stefan from Graz was dedicated to collecting coins from the Migration Period. Long after his death, the Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz (coin collection of the Berlin state museums) acquired Stefan’s collection and thereby contributed to preserving it. Stefan’s family donated his written legacy to the University of Vienna’s Department of Numismatics and Monetary History in the second half of the 1990s. The material gives a clear picture of Friedrich Stefan as a collector, numismatist and archaeologist, but also as an author and university professor.

In April 2009, Andreas Scherrer recorded the entire collection in the framework of a traineeship. He compiled a finding aid that provides a complete record of the entire material.
